The Well is the nickname for an old high-rise apartment building in the heart of the city. It received its name because it was built around a circular central courtyard which every apartment looks out on. It was finished in the 1920s in the neo-Gothic style and for a time was the city's most fashionable address. It has since languished, becoming more dilapidated with each passing year. Yet, it is still inhabited by a variety of residents: poorer folks, with no place else to live; a few well-off elderly, who moved in once and have never left; and some in-betweens who've ended up here in one way or another.
