A huge industrial-sized boiler runs along one wall, rusty pipes clanking and juddering with the effort of pumping heat into the building above. On the other wall loom a pair of huge water heaters and a giant junction box. A web of connections crisscross each other, split wires spilling their copper spines into the wire, twisting and wrapping around switches and fuses. You can feel it hum as you step by, and when you lift an arm the shift in the electric field sends a cascade of sparks across the floor.
You hurry to a pair of doors at the far end of the room. The first is locked, the second also. Behind the second you hear a rustling. At that moment, the bulb goes out.
In the complete darkness sounds become louder. The humming behind you and the rustling behind the door. A creak and the rustling comes closer. Something brushes against your leg. Your heart thumps and a trickle of sweat runs down your temple. You are not sure if you should reach down or just run.
There is a click in the dark, and the bulb flickers back on. At your feet is the black cat, now purring and rubbing against you. Relieved, you breathe out.
You notice the second door is open a crack. With some trepidation you push it in.
A utility closet: mops, brooms, dustpans, and in the corner, a mother cat with four mewing kittens. She glares at you angrily for disturbing her. You gently close the door, and try the first one again. Still locked.
There is nothing else for you to see here, so you return to the elevator.
